Cover Your Tracks

You need to be careful when going online.  It might be best to set your browser to “private” if it has this function.  That way your PC won’t keep cookies or history of sites you’ve visited.

It would be a good idea to turn on private browsing every time you use your PC.  Please be aware that private browsing doesn’t guarantee your tracks will be completely covered, if you need to be really safe when online then you are probably best to use a friends PC or your local library.

To turn on private browsing please follow these steps:

  • If using Google, then click the 3 dots at the top right of the page, google calls “private” mode “incognito” and you’ll know it’s switched on if you see a man in the top left of the window wearing sunglasses.
  • For most other browsers it’s similar, click on the 3 dots at the top right of the page, internet explorer has a gear sign (like settings) and select “Private Browsing”
  • If you’re using your smart phone or tablet, you do pretty much the same thing. The settings for the browser is usually found on the top right of the screen and when you click on it you can select the private or incognito browsing.
  • On a Mac click on “File” then select “private”

If you have been browsing without the “private” function switched on then you will need to clear your history.  This can be done using the following steps:

  • You should find the History command in the same place as the Private Browsers. Simply click on History then click clear.
  • On your iPhone or iPad, tap on the settings app, tap on Safari then tap clear cookies and data
